Philip Meyer has dedicated himself to exploring ways of making MIDI sequencing as intuitive and expressive as possible. This Pack of MIDI Tools showcases some of his most versatile devices, roughly split into two categories — Generators and Transformations.
Generators
The three 'generator' devices offer a variety of ways to create sequences without needing to manually program in individual notes.
Polyrhythm allows you to produce polymetric and polyrhythmic patterns using six pattern generators which work in modes such as Euclidean, with the potential for extended, rhythmically intriguing MIDI clips which take a long time to repeat themselves.
Phase Pattern provides a tactile and accessible way to manipulate timing, pitch and velocity on a clip to create surprising, organic results that would be difficult to program in manually. These results can be kept free of the constraints of the grid, or quantize settings can help lock the results down to the overall timing of your track.
With Stages you can turn a simple set of MIDI notes into longer, more developed patterns by moving sliders to determine pitch, note repeats and rests. This seemingly functional device quickly becomes a fast track to entirely new musical patterns.
Transformations
The 'transformation' devices offer a straight-forward way to add variations to existing MIDI patterns.
Using Retrigger you can create repeats of one, some or all MIDI notes in a clip, with parameters for velocity and time-shaping included. This device is perfect for quick fills or subtle tweaks to an existing pattern, with the slider-based interface lending itself to on-the-fly experimentation.
Slice Shuffler allows you to apply variations to separate slices of a MIDI clip. This way, you could make all the notes in the third quarter of your clip reverse their timing or add some randomness to the notes triggering at the end of the loop.
From the subtlest changes to controlled chaos, Philip Meyer's MIDI Tools contain vast potential to push your music into new rhythmic and melodic territory.
