"I don't remember any moment of thinking ‘Yes, I'll be a composer.’ It's just an evolving thing . . . you just deal with the decision that's right in front of you then." This is Anna Meredith, reflecting over the origins of her career as an award-winning classical composer and genre-defying band leader.
This approach is evident in the body of her work, spanning large scale orchestral works, music for no instruments, compositions for sleep pods and park benches in Hong Kong as well as her widely acclaimed solo albums. In creating FIBS, her recently released second LP, Anna combines visual scores, traditional notation, sequencing in Live, and arrangement for a small band. Coming from a life of being commissioned to write classical pieces, finding a balance between live instrumentation and digital production techniques was a new challenge. She shares this process along with insights into how her history affects working with a live touring band in our latest artist movie.
