A Personal Take: Abid Hussain on Sampling and Copyright

At the most recent Loop summit, we invited participants to give short presentations on an aspect of music making from their own personal perspectives and areas of expertise. Like a good DJ set or an old-time variety show, these talks gather sounds and stories from different musical worlds and throw them together on stage.

This time around, we’re happy to share a video of Abid Hussain’s enlightening presentation. Abid is an experienced electronic and alternative rock producer, who also happens to be both an Ableton Certified Trainer and a licensed attorney. As both a lawyer and a music producer, he’s been retained as an expert in copyright infringement cases, and in this video he gives an overview of recent rulings in the courts that may well impact the way samples and sampling are used in the future.
