Trick or Treat! The undead have climbed from their graves. Spirits are out and about, haunting the souls of the living and this Halloween we have a special sound design treat for you.

“The Haunting” is a project by Francis Prève, born out of a challenge to create real-world soundscapes with synthesis. Using only Operator, Live’s FM Synthesizer, Prève has recreated the sounds of a haunted house. Thunder, lightning, and wind, an old grandfather clock, and the sounds of the supernatural were cleverly designed with Operator and a few Live devices. The results are so convincing that you might check under your mixing console for monsters.

As Prève puts it, “there’s more you can do with synths besides make them beep.” And he would like to share that knowledge with you. Prève is kindly sharing the Ableton Live Project on his blog so you can see how he brought his creation to life.  

It’s a master class in sound design with Operator, as you reverse engineer the patches to see how each eerie sound was created. Summon your sound design beyond the grave of super-saw leads, evolving pads, and wobble basses!
